LifeSource is MORE than a blood bank. In addition to providing blood products (red blood cells, platelets and plasma) to the hospitals, LifeSource supports:
-
Bone marrow transplant support through its Hematopoietic Stem Cell Laboratory
Crossmatch and related activity through Transfusion Support Services (TSS)
-
Reference laboratory service through it's AABB/ARC reference lab
Viral testing services through LifeSource Testing Service (LTS).
-
LTS serves professional clinics, private physician's practices, and the chemistry, immunology, serology and blood bank laboratories of participating hospitals.
LifeSource's bone marrow registry is a regional recruiting center for potential donors in the National Marrow Donor Program. LifeSource also works with hospitals and transfusion medicine experts to establish and provide new blood therapies. It recently implemented a state-of-the-art immunohematology analyzer to provide advanced image analysis technology for new levels of efficiency, control, and security in ABO/Rh testing.
LifeSource is also involved in the continual upgrading of cell counters to improve both reliability and productivity in providing platelet counts. Its reference lab participates in the International Rare Donor Registry. These attributes form the vital link between LifeSource and Chicago area healthcare organizations.
LifeSource maintains working relationships with prominent members of the blood bank industry, such as the AABB and ARC in a constant effort to stay abreast of industry changes and to improve its ability to meet the changing needs of healthcare providers.
In pursuit of its goals, LifeSource has attained impressive milestones such as:
-
Supplying more than 350,000 units of blood, blood components and derivatives to more than 60 hospitals and over 100 other transfusion medicine providers.
-
Operating 22 donor centers, 3 mobile unit supported donor centers and conducting more than 1,800 mobile blood drives each year.
-
Maintaining a 80,000 member bone marrow registry - the largest bone marrow donor registry in Illinois - with an average of 12 bone marrow matches a year. We have facilitated 212 bone marrow harvests and 7 PBSC
collections.
-
Serving as the only full-service blood center to over 60 hospitals - 8 of which
are Level I trauma centers - and over 100 home healthcare agencies.
