- The donation process only takes about an hour and it’s perfectly safe and comfortable. The actual blood donation usually takes about 10 minutes.
- Nationally, someone needs blood every two seconds.
- There are 4.5 million lives saved each year by blood transfusion.
- There is no substitute for human blood.
- Shortages of all blood types happen during the summer holidays. Blood centers often run short of types O and B.
- LifeSource distributes a half million blood products annually to approximately 60 area hospitals.
- Blood usage varies, but on average an auto accident patient can use from 4 – 40 units of blood.
- Each unit of blood is tested for approximately 12 tests to ensure it is safe for transfusion.
