LifeSource offers a practice where blood collected from qualified donors with
Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH) during therapeutic phlebotomy will be used for
transfusion purposes if it meets all of our established standards. Donors with
HH will be given the opportunity to help brighten the lives of community
recipients who are in need of blood transfusions.
Therapeutic phlebotomies are performed Monday through Friday at all of the
LifeSource donor centers, which are conveniently located throughout the
Chicagoland area.
If a donor is interested in this practice but does not meet all the medical
eligibility requirements for blood donations, LifeSource will still perform a
therapeutic phlebotomy at no charge. The unit of blood will then be discarded
since it cannot be used for transfusion purposes.
Please note that blood collected from patients with secondary and non-genetic
forms of Hemochromatosis and other medical conditions during therapeutic
phlebotomy procedures will not be used for transfusion purposes. LifeSource
will, however, continue to perform therapeutic phlebotomies on such donors
free of charge.
Please help us brighten lives by referring individuals with HH or other
conditions that require therapeutic phlebotomy to our program. If you have any
questions regarding the new practice, please feel free contact the Special
Donations Department at 847-299-7386.
