Through more than 20 years of service to the
community, LifeSource has earned the public’s trust of achieving our
challenging mission of providing a consistently safe and adequate blood
supply for residents of Chicago and the surrounding regions. LifeSource
is the primary provider of blood, blood products and related transfusion
medicine services to 94% of Chicago hospitals. More than 450,000 blood
products are required each year to meet the patients' needs for
transfusion therapy. More than 700 units of blood are transfused every
24 hours, each day of the year, in hospitals serviced by LifeSource.
Patients come from across the nation and even
abroad seeking treatment from medical teams working in technologically
advanced settings. Chicago is blessed with a numerous amount of excellent
medical facilities. At one end are the community hospitals that answer
the need for basic and routine medical care for residents in their
immediate areas. At the other end of the spectrum are the sophisticated
and often pioneering regional referral centers. Highly specialized
services such as trauma centers, neonatal units, burn centers and
transplant programs are available to patients from a wide geographic
area. Our commitment to the care of critically ill and injured patients
as well as those undergoing routine procedures in need of blood
transfusions requires us to seek continuous improvements in the quality of
products and services we provide. Our effort to advance transfusion
medicine is ongoing. LifeSource recognizes its vital role in servicing
this challenging and excellent health care delivery system. The
achievements of the blood center are intertwined with the provision of
highly specialized treatment capabilities in our community.
Despite miraculous advancements in medicine,
there is no substitute for human blood. With the aging population, the
demand for blood products is likely to continue to grow since the management
of illnesses that strike the elderly often requires extensive blood service
support. The need for blood products can occur in people of all ages, from
the management of hematological disorders which strike newborns and
premature infants to the elderly population. The expertise available in the
advanced medical facilities has greatly diminished mortality rates and
complications from devastating diseases. An irreplaceable part of these
advances has been the highly specialized blood products prepared for these
patients by LifeSource. A stable blood supply is vital at all times to
ensure the excellence in the delivery of health care within our region.
